These 20 years are just the beginning of our commitment. We are more determined than ever to continue our mission of making justice accessible to all, defending the rights of the most vulnerable, and working for a more just and equitable world.

2004
Patricia Murphy, social worker at MCM, established the pilot project
“After a number of years providing assistance to newly arrived refugees in Montreal through our housing services (Projet Refuge, Maison Juan Moreno, and Projet Famille), we at MCM found ourselves facing new challenges. People were coming to us with different needs—support for their family reunification applications, humanitarian appeals, assistance with housing and discrimination issues, and many other types of problems. We consulted with McGill Law School, immigration lawyers, and other community resources. The result of this consultation was a new legal clinic—Just Solutions!

The Refugee Aid Committee (CAR) establishes a partnership with Fair Solutions to offer internships in law.
2006
Richard Goldman joins MCM as a part-time supervising attorney for Just Solutions
“It has been an honor and a wonderful experience to serve as supervising attorney for the Just Solutions Clinic for nearly 20 years. When I started, we had only one law student who came in two mornings a week. Today, we have two clinics, with the addition of the Roger Snelling Clinic, three permanent employees, and usually four to six student interns in social work and law, as well as the Danaïdes Project for advocacy and research. Most importantly, the impact on people's lives over the past 20 years has been immeasurable.
It is extremely rewarding to help a parent reunite with their children after a separation of 5 or 10 years, or to help someone who has been struggling for 5, 10, or even 25 years to obtain status in Canada to finally be accepted. I sometimes think that if we had helped just one of these cases, the clinics would have been worth it. And we have helped so many. One can only imagine the impact we will have over the next 20 years!”

The CAR joins Just Solutions
Created in 1984 by the United Church of Canada, the Refugee Aid Committee (CAR) played a crucial role in the collective defense and individual processing of cases involving refugees and immigrants with precarious status for 40 years.
In 2022-3, CAR closed its doors to join forces with MCM, and its coordinator, Peter Butler, joined the Just Solutions team.
2023
Danaïdes Project: Diversity without prejudice
Launched in 2022-23 with the addition of three new members to the Just Solutions team, this project aims to promote access to justice for im·migrants with precarious or no status through research, advocacy, awareness-raising, and strengthening the clinic's legal capacity.
2024
New project: English-language specialization
A new employee has joined the Just Solutions team to work with English-speaking immigrants in Québec.

Patricia Murphy, travailleuse sociale à la MCM, a établi le projet pilote
“Après un certain nombre d'années passées à fournir une aide aux réfugié·e·s nouvellement arrivé·e·s à Montréal par le biais de nos services de logement (Projet Refuge, Maison Juan Moreno et Projet Famille), nous nous sommes retrouvé·e·s, à MCM, face à de nouveaux défis. Les gens venaient nous voir avec des besoins différents - soutien pour leurs demandes de réunification familiale, appels humanitaires, aide pour les questions de logement et de discrimination, et bien d'autres types de problèmes. Nous avons consulté la faculté de droit de McGill, à des avocat·e·s spécialisé·e·s en droit de l’immigration et d'autres ressources communautaires. Le résultat de cette consultation a été une nouvelle clinique juridique – Solutions Justes!
Je vous souhaite un merveilleux anniversaire et de nombreuses autres années au service de la communauté et de l'accueil des personnes étrangères parmi nous.”

Maître Richard Goldman devient employé à temps partiel de la MCM en tant qu'avocat superviseur de Solutions Justes
“C’est un honneur et une expérience merveilleuse que d'être l'avocat superviseur de la clinique Solutions Justes depuis près de 20 ans. Lorsque j'ai commencé, nous n'avions qu'un étudiant en droit qui venait deux matins par semaine. Aujourd'hui, nous avons deux cliniques, avec l'ajout de la clinique Roger Snelling, trois employés permanents, et généralement quatre à six étudiant·e·s stagiaires en travail social et en droit, ainsi que le Projet Danaïdes pour la défense des droits et la recherche. Plus important encore, l'impact sur la vie des gens au cours des 20 dernières années a été incommensurable.
Il est extrêmement gratifiant d'aider un parent à retrouver ses enfants après une séparation de 5 ou 10 ans, ou d'aider une personne qui lutte depuis 5, 10 ou même 25 ans pour obtenir un statut au Canada à être enfin acceptée. Je me dis parfois que si nous n'avions aidé qu'un seul de ces cas, l'existence des cliniques en aurait valu la peine. Et nous en avons tellement aidé. On ne peut qu'imaginer l'impact que nous aurons au cours des 20 prochaines années !”

En 2022-3, le CAR a fermé ses portes afin de joindre ses forces à celles de la MCM, et son coordinateur, Peter Butler, a rejoint l'équipe de Solutions Justes.

Projet Danaïdes : Diversité sans préjugés
Lancé en 2022-23 avec l’ajout de 3 nouveaux membres à l’équipe de Solutions Justes, ce projet vise à promouvoir l'accès à la justice pour les personnes im·migrantes à statut précaire ou sans statut, par le biais de la recherche, du plaidoyer, de la sensibilisation, ainsi que par le renforcement des capacités juridiques de la clinique.

Nouveau projet : Spécialisation anglophone
Une nouvelle employée a rejoint l’équipe de Solutions Justes pour travailler avec les personnes im·migrantes s'exprimant en anglais au Québec.
